Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

The Carbon Energy Fund released a tender to select Innovation Partners to work with NHS Trusts across the UK to identify Low Carbon Heat opportunities. We were selected as preferred Partner by the CEF and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust for the Wythenshawe Hospital.

The hospital has a heat requirement of approximately 25GWhrs per annum which is expected to be fully served by a geothermal plant. The project team are currently working with the hospital and existing framework providers on the best approach to achieve this with the potential to also supply to additional users in the area if initial estimates are validated. This feasibility work assesses Technical, Regulatory and Commercial workstreams in order to establish a viable project to take forward to the next stage. As Innovation Partner, we will carry out a full assessment of this heat potential of the subsurface leading through to plant and well design, applications for planning consents and securing of necessary permits for operation.

It is expected that, subject to a successful appraisal program, that heat might be available to the hospital as soon as 2027.
